Peggy Shaner embarked on her enduring journey with cannabis during the culturally dynamic 1960s, a time characterized by the heady cocktail of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. In those revolutionary years, she took to the front lines for cannabis legalization, marching on the steps of the State Supreme Court in San Francisco. Peggy’s unwavering commitment to cannabis legalization wasn’t bound by geography, as she carried her advocacy from the iconic streets of San Francisco to the shimmering lights of Las Vegas in the 1980s when she moved to Nevada. There she embarked on a remarkable journey, birthing Pahrump Valley Vineyards. But this venture wasn’t a stroll through the vineyards, as it entailed challenging Nevada’s antiquated blue laws that had forbidden alcohol production state-wide.

Peggy wasn’t one to shy away from a formidable challenge; she locked horns with the State Gaming Board and Liquor Distributors to make her dream a reality. Despite an initial setback in convincing state legislators during the first round of legal maneuvering, Peggy pressed on. She decided to build the winery and plant the grapes anyway, all while plotting her return during the next legislative session two years down the road. She reasoned, that if she couldn’t open a winery, she could at least open a brothel instead, because those were legal in Pahrump! But her resolve was unyielding, and she had her sights set on the eventual victory. And on St. Patrick’s Day in 1990, Pahrump Valley Vineyards finally uncorked its doors for business, grateful she wouldn’t have to be a Madam after all!

Much like her dogged determination in the vineyard, Peggy now sets her sights on another ambitious goal: the removal of cannabis from the Schedule I classification under the Controlled Substances Act. This formidable undertaking aligns perfectly with her lifetime of unwavering persistence. Serving on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Cannabis has injected fresh momentum and fervor into her tireless pursuits. One might say she’s cultivating quite the legacy – whether it’s in grapes or cannabis!
