From Startup to Powerhouse: How the Chamber Reshaped Nevada's Cannabis Landscape

CofCLV Board of Directors – Leading the Chamber of Cannabis in Nevada

In less than four years, the Chamber of Cannabis has changed the cannabis laws of Nevada and advocated for further state and federal reform for cannabis on several monumental levels.

During the 2021 Nevada Legislative Session when the organization was less than a year old, the Chamber of Cannabis worked tirelessly and diligently with then-Assemblyman Steve Yeager to introduce Assembly Bill 341, the revolutionary bill which authorized the opening of consumption lounges in the Silver State and the industry’s first true attempt at social equity measures. Since the signing of AB 341, Yeager has continued to work with the Chamber and became Speaker of the Nevada Assembly during the 2023 Legislative Session, giving the Chamber and their army of passionate cannabis professionals and advocates a very strong ally in Nevada state government.

Speaking of the 2023 Legislative Session, the Chamber continued to change and strengthen the Nevada cannabis industry when they collaborated with State Senator Dallas Harris to file Senate Bill 277, a landmark bill which doubled the daily purchasing limits of cannabis products and provided licensing reforms and changes to the “excluded felony offenses” rules to make the industry more accessible for entry and employment. Along with the significant ease of entry that SB 277 finally provided the doubling of the purchasing limits could certainly provide an excellent financial opportunity to the Nevada cannabis industry after a very widely felt and devastating sales deficit of nearly $115 million dollars from FY2022 to FY2023.

Over the course of 2023 alone, the Chamber of Cannabis continued to work with and host elected officials from both sides of the political aisle. A true testament to the strong bipartisan support that both statewide and nationwide cannabis reform policies undeniably has behind them, the Chamber has hosted Nevada politicians from all legislative committees and duties within the Legislature.

On the blue side of the aisle, the Chamber has worked with a variety of Democratic politicians from many different professions and walks of life, such as State Senator and member of the Judiciary Committee Rochelle Nguyen, and Rancho High School teacher and Purple Heart veteran, Reuben D’Silva. On the Republican side of the aisle, where support for cannabis reform usually isn’t as blatant but still present, the Chamber hosted notable Nevada conservatives such as former State Senator and current Executive Director of the Nevada Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation, Scott Hammond, as well as real estate broker and Assemblywoman, Danielle Gallant.

On the local level, a vital connection that the Chamber of Cannabis has made over the years is with longtime Nevada lawmaker and current Chair of the Clark County Commission, Tick Segerblom.

During the Chamber’s historic trip to Carson City in April of 2023, the powerful army of 25 cannabis professionals and advocates spoke and met with nearly every representative who wasn’t currently in a committee meeting. From the most conservative to the most liberal and every moderate in between, the Chamber made sure to make the affirmative case for SB 277 and the other crucial pieces of legislation.

With 2024 being a presidential election along with many other game-changing elections, not to mention several different cannabis legalization or decriminalization votes happening across the country, the Chamber of Cannabis has many plans to stay just as, if not even more, politically involved on all levels of American government.
